Celebrating Black History Month: Meet Brock Seals, A Creative Force Shaping St. Louis

This Black History Month, AIGA St. Louis is proud to spotlight Brock Seals, a multi-disciplinary artist whose creativity knows no bounds. From music to murals, fashion to fine art, Brock’s work isn’t just about making a statement—it’s about inspiring change and bringing people together.

From Beats to Brushes: How It All Started

Brock’s journey started with a love for music. “I started as a rapper,” he shares, “but fashion was always a way for me to express myself.” Launching a clothing line with friends sparked his curiosity to explore his artistic vision even further. A few years later, he picked up a paintbrush—and never looked back. Today, his art echoes the rhythm of his life, blending music, culture, and community into every piece.

Murals That Speak to the City

If you’ve walked through The Delmar Loop, downtown, or various neighborhoods across St. Louis, chances are you’ve seen Brock’s work. His vibrant murals reflect the heart and soul of the city, serving as a reminder that “the only thing more boring than a blank canvas is a blank mind.” Drawing inspiration from his surroundings, Brock’s art resonates with the everyday viewer while paying homage to his roots.

A Name That Echoes Beyond St. Louis

Brock’s talent has captured the attention of icons like Erykah Badu, Dapper Dan, and Nipsey Hussle, and his recent collaboration with the St. Louis Cardinals further cemented his status as an influential creator. But his proudest moment? Painting custom football cleats that were worn in the Super Bowl. “That’s been a goal of mine for 10 years,” Brock reflects. “Seeing it come full circle was surreal.”

Creating Connections Through Collaboration

Brock believes that art is a bridge that connects people. “Collaboration is a huge part of my creative process. It brings in fresh ideas and perspectives that elevate the work,” he explains. He sees community-driven projects as a way to build unity and pride in St. Louis, creating spaces that reflect the city’s culture and energy.

“Blessed by the Ancestors” Exhibit at City Museum

Currently, Brock has curated the “Blessed by the Ancestors” exhibit at the City Museum, running through April 30, 2025. This captivating showcase features works from 15 Black artists from the St. Louis area, including paintings, sculptures, and mixed media pieces. The exhibit delves into themes of identity, resilience, and ancestry, offering visitors a profound exploration of the Black experience. Admission to the exhibit is included with general museum entry, inviting all to engage with these powerful narratives.

Art, Mimosas & Pancakes

Looking ahead, Brock is gearing up to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Art, Mimosas & Pancakes in July 2025. This annual event has become a cornerstone of the St. Louis art scene, offering a vibrant platform for local artists to showcase their talents. Attendees can anticipate a day filled with diverse art forms, live music, and, of course, delightful mimosas and pancakes. The event fosters community engagement and provides artists with invaluable exposure. As Brock hints, the milestone anniversary promises exciting new features and experiences for all participants.

Words of Wisdom for Emerging Creatives

For those navigating their own artistic paths, Brock’s advice is simple but powerful: “Find your creative voice and make the most of it. There’s no right or wrong way to play this art game. Create every day.”

Staying Inspired and Keeping It Real

Brock draws inspiration from everyday life—conversations, music, and the world around him. When facing creative burnout, he simply switches to a different medium or takes a trip to reset his perspective. And his favorite place in St. Louis? “Home.”
